Clear vision starts with knowing exactly what your eyes need. Refraction is the test that measures how light enters your eyes, allowing your doctor to prescribe the right glasses or contact lenses.
At Eye Physicians & Surgeons, our board-certified ophthalmologists have been serving Atlanta and Decatur families for over 50 years. With advanced diagnostic technology and a reputation built on trust, we make this essential step in eye care accurate, thorough, and patient-focused.
What to Expect During a Refraction
For many patients, a refraction test is quick, simple, and entirely painless. During the exam, your ophthalmologist or optometrist will use a device called a phoropter—the instrument with rotating lenses that you look through. You’ll be asked to compare pairs of lenses (“Which is clearer, one or two?”) to help determine the exact prescription for your eyes.
This process allows your doctor to measure nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia, ensuring you receive the most accurate glasses or contact lens prescription possible. At Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we take the time to explain each step, so you feel comfortable and confident throughout your exam.
Insurance Coverage and Refraction Fees
It’s important to note that most medical insurance plans, including Medicare, do not cover routine refractions or eye examinations when no underlying medical eye problem is suspected.
Even when refraction is medically necessary—such as in cases involving cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration—it remains a non-covered service. Despite this, refraction can provide invaluable insights into your eye health.
If you have a vision plan that includes routine or annual eye exams and/or coverage for glasses, please inform us. Your vision plan may help cover aspects of your eye care not included in your medical insurance.
The fee for a refraction service at Eye Physicians & Surgeons is $50.00. This fee is separate from the general eye examination fee and is collected at the time of service. Should your insurance plan reimburse the refraction cost, we will promptly refund you the amount paid.
